Germany
The German Bundestag approved the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe on Thursday 12th May. 569 MP's voted in favour of the text versus only 23 against and two abstentions. The draft law is to be presented to the Bundesrat, the Upper Chamber of German Parliament where, as in the Bundestag, adoption of the text requires a majority of two thirds.
France/Polls
Two new polls were published on 9th May: CSA and
Sofres maintain that the ‘yes’ vote is still a
(stable) majority at 51% and 52%.
Germany
/ French Referendum
The German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer spoke
during the referendum campaign declaring that he is
clearly in favour of the “yes” vote.
Germany/France
German intellectuals as renowned as the philosopher
Jürgen Habermas and the Nobel Literature Prize
Winner, Günter Grass, have called on the French to
vote in favour of the European Constitution. In
their letter they maintain that the “consequences of
a victory by the ‘no’ vote would be a catastrophe
for the work towards unity to which we owe the
greatest period of peace that has lasted over fifty
years.”
